Smart Stormwater Monitoring at UMD

Urban development and climate change have increased the complexity of stormwater management, leading to greater flooding and water quality concerns. Traditional monitoring methods often lack real-time data and adaptability. In a recently published article, Jason Baer and Kaitlyn Peterson from the Office of Environmental Affairs at ESSR co-authored a study on an IoT-based stormwater monitoring system deployed at the University of Maryland. Developed with input from campus stakeholders and partially funded through campus sustainability funds, the system enables continuous data collection to support regulatory compliance and long-term planning. The full article, "An IoT‐based campus‐scale stormwater monitoring framework: A living laboratory for smart and resilient stormwater management," is available here.
